Handmade Hanukkah Gifts for the Whole Family
By Kelly · Updated 2026-10-17
Handmade gifts for Hanukkah provide a thoughtful way to observe the eight nights without relying on mass-produced items. Focusing on small, high-quality projects allows for a meaningful gift exchange that honors tradition while fitting into a busy holiday schedule.
Planning Eight Nights of Gifts
To manage the production of eight distinct gifts, select projects that utilize similar materials or can be made in batches. The following projects are designed for adult crafters to create for family members of all ages.
Hand-Dipped Beeswax Hanukkah Candles
Adults · 45 min · about $15 for 44 candles
- 1 lb yellow beeswax pellets
- Cotton square braid wick (size #2/0)
- Tall narrow metal dipping pitcher
- Digital thermometer
- Large pot for water bath
- Scissors
- Place beeswax pellets in the dipping pitcher and set the pitcher inside a large pot filled with 3 inches of water to create a double boiler.
- Heat the wax until it reaches 160°F, monitoring the temperature with a digital thermometer to prevent overheating.
- Cut the cotton wick into 10-inch lengths; you will dip two candles at once by holding the center of the wick.
- Dip the wick into the melted wax for 2 seconds, remove, and pull the ends straight as the wax cools.
- Repeat the dipping process, allowing the wax to harden for 30 seconds between each dip, until the candles are approximately 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick.
- Safety note: Never leave melting wax unattended and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Use a dedicated pitcher as beeswax is difficult to remove from cookware.
Infused Rosemary and Garlic Olive Oil
Adults · 20 min · about $5 per bottle
- 8 oz glass swing-top bottles
- High-quality extra virgin olive oil
- Dried rosemary sprigs
- Dried garlic cloves
- Small kitchen funnel
- Adhesive bottle labels
- Wash the glass bottles in hot, soapy water and dry them completely in a low oven (200°F) to ensure no moisture remains.
- Place one sprig of dried rosemary and two dried garlic cloves into each bottle.
- Use a funnel to fill the bottles with olive oil, leaving 1/2 inch of headspace at the top.
- Secure the swing-top lid and wipe the exterior of the bottle with a damp cloth to remove any oil residue.
- Apply a label with the infusion date and a 'use by' date of two months.
- Safety note: Only use thoroughly dried herbs and garlic to prevent the risk of botulism, which can occur with fresh ingredients stored in oil.
Hand-Stitched Wool Felt Gelt Pouches
Adults · 30 min · about $3 per pouch
- Navy blue wool felt sheets
- Gold embroidery floss
- Size 5 embroidery needle
- 1/4 inch gold satin ribbon
- Fabric scissors
- Fabric chalk or silver marking pencil
- Cut two 4-inch diameter circles from the navy blue wool felt for each pouch.
- On one circle, use fabric chalk to lightly draw a Star of David in the center.
- Thread the needle with three strands of gold embroidery floss and use a backstitch to outline the star design.
- Place the two circles together and sew around the edge using a blanket stitch, leaving a 1.5-inch opening at the top.
- Cut a 12-inch piece of gold ribbon and stitch the center of the ribbon to the back of the pouch near the opening.
- Fill with chocolate gelt and tie the ribbon in a bow to secure the contents.
When making multiple gifts, create a checklist of recipients and nights to track your progress and ensure every family member has a gift ready for each sundown.
